Olsavsky Participates in CIT '09 At Oswego

Along with making a presentation on "Amateur Digital Photography" during a Birds-of-a-Feather session and facilitating other paper sessions, once again, John Olsavsky played his role as "Unofficial CIT Photographer" at the 2009 Annual Conference on Instructional Technology (CIT) sponsored by the State University of New York (SUNY) Faculty Access to Computing Technology (FACT) Committee held this year on the SUNY College at Oswego campus in Oswego, NY from May 19 to 22, 2009. This year's theme is "Engaging Minds: Innovative Teaching and Learning". John has attended sixteen of the eighteen conferences over the years and serves on the Conference Planning Committee which consists of faculty from several SUNY campuses and the team from the SUNY Center for Professional Development. John stores these images online where they can be viewed.

(NOTE: SUNY Plattsburgh will host CIT 2010 next year.)

Accounting Faculty Attend Ohio Conference

Accounting professors Linda Hall, John Olsavsky, Ken Plucinski and Maya Thevenot accompanied graduate student Valerie Bennett to the 50th Annual Meeting of The Ohio Region of the American Accounting Association held at The Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva in Geneva on the Lake, OH. Ms. Bennett presented a paper entitled, "Client/Auditor Loyalty and Adverse Internal Control Opinions–Why Some Companies Choose to Stay with their Existing Auditors through Tough Times" that she and Dr. Hall co-authored. Dr. Thevenot moderated a concurrent session of paper presentations on "Educational Resources: Specialized Knowledge and Applications". They all spent Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9 attending paper presentation sessions by faculty from universities located in Ohio and several other states.

Accounting Society Hosts Speaker #6

The Fredonia State Accounting Society held its sixth speaker meeting of the spring semester at 5:00 PM on Thursday, April 30 in 209 McEwen Hall. Guest speaker, Mary Shoff ‘86 Associate Examiner in the Division of Local Government and School Accountability of the NYS Office of the State Comptroller, spoke about "Careers in New York State Auditing".

Students & Faculty Attend Education Night Dinner

Fredonia State University School of Business faculty members John Olsavsky, Kenneth Plucinski and Dr. Maya Thevenot accompanied six students to the Education Night Dinner hosted by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) Buffalo Chapter on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Salvatore's Italian Gardens, Williamsville, NY. Our award winners this year are:
  • Senior Rachael Edwards received the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants Award presented to the senior student majoring in accounting. Darren received a certificate and a one-year membership in the NYSSCPAs. The Buffalo Chapter also gave him an engraved business-card holder.
  • Junior Jacqueline Z. Modera received the Buffalo Chapter John T. Kennedy Award presented to the top junior student majoring in accounting. Rachael received a certificate and an engraved pen and pencil set from the Buffalo Chapter.
Four of our most promising junior accounting majors - Robert Brady, Patrick Capella, Christina Coia, and Thomas Demmer - accompanied their classmates to the event.

Hall Presents At BRCWNY Conference

Associate Professor Linda Hall presented a paper entitled, "Client/Auditor Loyalty and Adverse Internal Control Options – Why some Companies Choose to Stay with their Existing Auditors through Tough Times", at the Fourth Annual Conference of the Business Research Consortium of Western New York held at St. John Fisher College, Rochester, NY on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Assistant Professor John Olsavsky attended the conference with her.

Accounting Society Thanks VITA Volunteers

As a token of thanks to those selfless Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers, the Fredonia State Accounting Society treated them with a trip to a Buffalo Bisons baseball game. Faculty advisor John Olsavsky escorted the students to Coca-Cola Field and took pictures. The weather was beautiful, but the home team went down to defeat 4-0.

Ornowski '08 Doing "Good" At Chiampou

Associate Professor Linda Hall received an email from Amanda Ornowski '08 at Chiampou Travis Besaw & Kershner to say hello and tell us that, "She is doing well and getting ready to do volunteer work to fill her time after tax season." I wonder where she learned about "Giving Back" to the community...hmmm?

Burling '07 At CDLM In Ithaca

Chris Burling '07 updated Assistant Professor John Olsavsky about his recent activities when they crossed paths at the local Tim Hortons on Sunday. After graduating in December of 2007, Chris soon after joined the firm of Ciaschi Dietershagen Little Mickelson & Company in their Ithaca office. He also is enrolled in the MBA program at Ithaca College.

Olsavsky Participates in P.O.G.I.L. Workshop

Assistant Professor John Olsavsky participated in a One-Day Introductory P.O.G.I.L. Workshop held at SUNY Fredonia on Saturday, April 18th, 2009. The NSF sponsored workshop was presented by Tom Eberlein, Penn State Harrisburg and Kris Lantzky-Eaton, St. John Fisher College. P.O.G.I.L. (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) is a research based learning environment where students are actively engaged in mastering course content and in developing essential skills by working in self-managed teams on guided inquiry activities.

The Fredonia State Accounting Society held its fifth speaker meeting of the spring semester at 5:00 PM on Thursday, April 16 in 209 McEwen Hall. Guest speakers, Excise Tax Auditor Ray Kenneson ‘85 and Sales Tax Auditor Cordell Thompson ‘02, of the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, spoke about "Careers in New York State Taxation".
